Crystallize BA Final Major Project (2013)

An exciting collection by emerging designer Jen Cheema, comprised of garments, jewellery and accessories. The main inspiration for this collection is taken from minerals; their unique formation, structure, texture and colour. Vibrant, synthetic colour and unusual materials are distinguishing characteristics of Jen’s work and playful aesthetic as a designer.

Garment shapes are clean and graphic, and references for this collection nod to 90’s popular culture, the current phenomenon of tumblr blogging, and inspiring female musicians (such as Bjork, CoCoRosie, Grimes, FKA twigs and Erykah Badu) on whom Jen envisages her designs being worn during performance.

The collection, which is aimed at a womenswear market, combines fabrics such as latex, pvc and neoprene, embellished with glitter and perspex shapes, and complimented with resin jewellery.

Collage and photography are an integral part of Jen’s digital-print designing and development; and the immediacy of these techniques contrast the slow, considered process of creating her three-dimensional objects. Processes such as laser-cutting, dip-dyeing, sublimation printing and the use of resin have been explored and utilised within this collection, and print placements upon garments are confident.
